MA Amanda plot summary
My Amanda is a story about two best friends named TJ and Amanda who have a very intimate relationship. They are so close, in fact, that they don't even bat an eyelid when they see the other.
Amanda's Nana is sure best friends would simply laugh off any of these suggestions. Both have their own romantic endeavors and problems. Amanda is still hung up on her ex Kelvin, while TJ can't come to terms with a long-term relationship.
Will Amanda and TJ find true love elsewhere? Or are they destined to be together?
What is going on between Amanda and Kelvin?
There is no conversation between Amanda and Kelvin throughout the film. Early on, Kelvin sends Amanda a simple "I miss you" message after they break up. As Amanda herself said, there are no smileys or even periods at the end of the message. He seems pretty disingenuous, but Amanda debates whether or not to get back with him. She wants to find love and isn't sure how she really feels about TJ.
Finally, TJ helps out and texts Kelvin for him. Well, Amanda's ex-boyfriend shows up at her place with a bouquet of flowers and the couple gets married. The only problem is that they are all fake.
We fast forward in time and see TJ take Amanda away. It turns out that Kelvin faked the whole ceremony. The pastor was an actor and the wedding was a big front. To make matters worse, Kelvin cheated on Amanda during their time together.
TJ is not happy with Kelvin and even more so when he finds out that the man hit her multiple times. Although this revelation comes before the wedding, Amanda immediately says that if faced with the choice, she would choose her best friend over Kelvin.
What is Amanda's diagnosis at the hospital?
Feeling under the weather, TJ accompanies Amanda to the hospital. There they learn that Amanda is both pregnant and suffering from cancer.
The doctor wants to take an x-ray to make sure Amanda is okay, but before that she does a pregnancy test. Amanda is also asked about her period, which she believes was about a month ago. However, he is not 100% sure.
His blank stares and silence are deafening. It's a yes to both of those questions.
Are TJ and Amanda in love?
After Joana and TJ break up, Amanda continues to ride her bike throughout her pregnancy. She hugs her baby bump and starts preparing the room for little Amanda. TJ is there for her best friend, she went with Amanda to the hospital where she gave birth.
From this point it is also clear that Amanda's cancer is in a worsening debt period. She, TJ, and little Amanda enjoy their limited time together, but the screen soon begins to shift and Amanda drifts away from these happy memories. It turns out that these are actually projected memories and not true reflections of events.
All the narration we hear throughout the film is actually TJ reading excerpts from his book - 1001 Letters to Amanda. This confirms his true feelings, where TJ mentions more than once that Amanda is his true love and that he adores everything about her. It turns out that Amanda died very soon during childbirth, or at least after the silent diagnosis given by the nurse at the hospital.
This turn of events explains why TJ and Amanda were never able to have a relationship. His heart clearly belongs to Amanda, but he has never been able to express his true feelings.
How does my Amanda end up?
When Amanda dies, Little Amanda stays with TJ for the foreseeable future. There are some question marks about parental rights here, especially considering the baby belongs to Kelvin. His absence from most of the story suggests that he isn't too bothered. With that in mind, it's up to TJ to raise this kid himself.
It's not as happy, as the film instead focuses on the trials and tribulations of friends and how that can affect the dynamics of your life. But then again, it's a little disappointing that the pair never got romantic, isn't it?
