Movie Review
Movie Focus
This movie centers on two best friends, TJ and Amanda. From the opening scene, it's immediately clear that these two have chemistry. They flirt, joke, and even have pet names for each other. In fact, their bond is so strong that they often joke about being in a relationship.
My Amanda explores this idea by exploring the theme of star-crossed friends while teasing a possible romance, introducing one-off supporting characters throughout its 90-minute runtime. However, these are just props to further the plot.
She's still attached to her ex Kelvin and isn't sure if she wants to get back together.
Meanwhile, TJ finds himself on unfulfilling flings—the latest of which comes midway through the film in the form of a girl named Joana. As the film reaches its climax, it brings with it a rather subjective ending that is very much in love/hate territory.
Outside of TJ and Amanda, the film really struggles to add any depth to its supporting characters. While this is part of the artistic vision, Joana only gets around for a few lines, while Kelvin's brief cameo gets less than dialogue.
Good Aspects
One of the stronger aspects of this film from an aesthetic point of view. There are also a number of gorgeously shot fade edits and some truly dreamy set-up shots. The backdrop of the Philippines really helps show off the beauty of the country, while the realistic banter and dialogue for our best friends keeps things in focus.
Problems
The problem is that My Amanda lacks a compelling plot and plays like a slow-paced slice of life drama. As with life's relationships, sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. My Amanda isn't shy about describing it, but she spends most of her time stargazing and drinking, leaving important plot points late.
If you can go in with an open mind and don't expect a conventional ending, you should find plenty to like here. The chemistry between TJ and Amanda is absolutely electric and you can feel the tension building in every scene they share together. Unfortunately, not everything around creates a spark.
